Industry Takeover: The Lowdown

8 Mar
Jay & Ras Kwame

Jay interviews Ras Kwame for Takeover TV

This Saturday, the Rich Mix played host to the urban music extravaganza that was Industry Takeover. Organised by all of us down at Urban Development with the support of our partners who included Biggafish, Rising Tide, PRS and others we were able to put on a day filled with workshops, seminars and showcases for inspiring music industry professionals.

Clement Marfo, Jay & Hammer

Clement Marfo, Jay Diamond (Rinse FM) & Hammer

The day kicked off with the emerging stage set in the midst of the music market,  and was hosted by Ralph Hardy and Shemika and featured a number of talented up-and-coming acts throughout the day. Highlights from the emerging stage were Leanne Robinson who wowed the crowd with her strong vocals, Chockz the Rapper who threw down his bars with the usual Chocolatey Charisma and Hammer who performed his current release ‘Mic Check’ (out March 8th – yes that’s a plug!). However, my personal favourite (besides Hammer) was East London lyricist, English whose flow had me in a daze – he’s definitely one to watch.

Urban Entrepreneurs: VNV Sounds – More Than DJs

27 Feb
VNV Sounds

L-R: DJ Vibes and DJ 1st Nature

DJ Vibes, the brains behind VNV Sounds is not just a DJ, and by this I’m not referring to the numerous club promoters hustling outside raves. Nope. DJ Dean ‘Vibes’ Michael is an entrepreneur.

Having built his reputation as a university DJ over the last few years as part of the duo, Voice n Vibes, he quickly made a name for himself. As a result he has played in some of the most prestigious venues around the UK and abroad such as The Ministry of Sound and The O2 Arena.

Following the popularity of Voice n Vibes among the univeristy crowd, they lauched a merchandise range that included quirky slogans t-shirts with messages such as “Eating Credit Crunch for Breakfast.”

However, not one to be complacent about the achievements he already had under his belt, Brunel University graduate, Vibes was driven by his passion for music and events and in 2009 set up the entertainment company, VNV Sounds.

VNV Sounds is a one-stop shop events service providing everything from events management, sound and lighting, DJs, photograpy and graphic design.

In less than a year, the company has catered for a range of clients both corporate and private including Elevation Networks and Cellar Door and continues to grow from strength to strength in 2010.
